SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED during Windows install

When 0x7E appears while Setup is copying files, installing drivers, or on the first reboot of a clean install, you rarely have a desktop. Prove media, memory, and storage before blaming Windows itself.

First cut Already-installed Windows that bluescreens at everyday startup → on startup or boot loop. This page is only for failures inside Setup or the first boots of a brand-new install.

Step 1 — Confirm it fails inside setup

Note whether the crash hits while copying files, “Getting devices ready,” or on the first reboot into the new install. Microsoft Answers threads for install-time 0x7E cluster around hardware and media, not in-OS apps.

Step 2 — Minimal hardware boot

  1. Disconnect USB devices except keyboard, mouse, and the installer.
  2. Remove extra GPUs / capture cards if you can drive the board’s video output.
  3. Boot with one storage drive only when testing.

Step 3 — Memory defaults

Step 4 — Storage and controllers

Try another SATA/NVMe port or cable; for USB installers, prefer USB 2.0 ports. Avoid unsupported RAID modes until after Windows is installed. Do not load random “storage driver packs” from unofficial sites.

Step 5 — BIOS and official install media

  1. Update motherboard/laptop BIOS from the OEM only.
  2. Recreate install media with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool or official ISO — bad ISOs and “all-in-one” tools are a common false lead.
  3. If Setup still throws 0x7E on multiple official USBs, treat it as hardware until proven otherwise.

FAQ

Can Safe Mode fix an install-time crash?

Usually no — Safe Mode needs an installed system. Use minimal hardware, memory defaults, and clean media first.

Brand-new PC still hits 0x7E in Setup

Reseat CPU cooler / RAM / GPU power, update BIOS, test RAM. Forum reports for new builds with this stop code are often unstable memory or incomplete power connections.
