Use this page when the blue screen started right after a cumulative update, feature update, or driver delivered through Windows Update. Roll the update back before you rebuild the PC.

First cut If the BSOD names a module such as nvlddmkm.sys or etd.sys, still uninstall a just-installed update, then fix that driver. Cannot stay in Windows long enough to open Settings → use WinRE steps below or boot loop.

Step 1 — Confirm it started after an update

Microsoft Answers threads for this stop code after an update repeatedly start with uninstalling the latest quality update.

Step 2 — Uninstall the update from Settings (if you can boot)

  1. Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates.
  2. Remove the newest quality update first; if the crash began after a feature update, remove that instead when listed.
  3. Reboot and see whether SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED returns.

Step 4 — Pause updates and retest

  1. After a successful uninstall, pause updates briefly so the same package does not reinstall during testing.
  2. Use the PC the way it crashed before (idle, login, launch the same app).
  3. If a specific .sys still appears on the next BSOD, leave this page for the module branch.

FAQ

Can a Windows Update cause SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED?

Yes. Cumulative and driver updates can ship a bad driver or kernel change. Uninstalling the latest quality update is the first recovery option Microsoft lists when problems start after an update.

Should I uninstall security updates permanently?

No. Use uninstall to restore stability, pause briefly, then install a later cumulative when available. Leaving security updates off long-term is a last resort.

Uninstall updates is missing in WinRE

Some installs hide the option or the update cannot be removed. Try Startup Settings → Safe Mode, then uninstall from Settings, or see boot loop.
